Lodewijk Frederik Hendrik (Louis) Apol was born in The Hague in 1850. In his early years the painter was strongly influenced, both in style and subject matter, by his teachers J.F. Hoppenbrouwers and P. Stortenbeker. Apol became one of the leading masters of The Hague School.
In his snowy winter landscapes, with forests and waterways, nature forms the centre of attention. In the soft, almost fairy-tale landscapes man plays a minor or no role. Apol found his inspiration in the countryside around The Hague and Arnhem.
Due to his reputation as a painter of winter scenes, he got invited to take part in the polar expedition of Willem Barentsz to artic Russia.
