Willy Sluiter

(1873 - 1949)

Jan Willem (Willy) Sluiter, gentleman artist, was born in 1873 in Zwijndrecht. After many year of shifting from place to place in Holland, he finally took lessons at the Rotterdamse Academie and later on in The Hague. He left the Haagse School and focused more on the French Impressionist and Post-impressionist styles. He was much influenced by the scenes of Toulouse Lautrec.

His paintings and drawings often show fashionable scenes and fishing scenes on the beach. Later in his career he became a well-known society portraitist. Sluiter was also famous for his political prints and posters.
